12" OF THE WEEK//CALIBRE – JUDGEMENT DAY EP [SAMURAI]

ok ok, so not a 12" as such but when calibre is involved im sure it can be overlooked. samurai boss presha pulled off quite a coup in getting this 4 tracker as calibre is one of the most prolific and highly respected producers in drum & bass. its sometimes argued that the majority of his tracks are very similar and in honesty they are - nice crisp break, little flourishes of strings and keys and a touch of vocals and hey presto. this is what makes the irishman such a talent though as if any other producer stuck to a particular style as much as he has (his back catalogue is pretty impressive) they would get shouted down and told that they need to be more inventive with their beats. not so calibre as the results, however many times you hear them, are always sublime. from the sultry vocals on the title track of this ep to the straight up dancefloor vibes of 'thrust', this is calibre at his most traditional, but at the same time, very very best. an essential purchase for all d&b fans, whatever ridiculous micro sub-set of the genre you are into.

not often do other genres creep onto this blog but an exception has to be made in this case. an amazing 12" of laid back soulful dubstep grooves from planas on the always excellent immerse label. buy buy buy
